Good low-maintenence, healthy fish for a smallish container?

I want to get a fish for my friend because her betta died. A betta really is the ideal fish to keep in a smallish container, but surely there are some others? For example, I've kept guppies alive and healthy forever in gallon-sized bowls. I don't want to just give her a repeat of a betta. What other fish are good choices?
