My wife and myself have took up fishing, and we are using some old zebcos someone gave us lol. They are so old I believe Columbus used them on his way here.

Anyway I think its time for an upgrade to say the least. Mostly we get small fish, but I would like something that could actually net me in a big fish should the big fish choose to hit my line.

What is out there, we both in college so not swimming in money so can't blow too much money :)

Thanks!
Edit: I suppose should also add, we are type of fishermen/women that sit on the bank and fish at the lake. Nothing too serious, but as I said, I would like to know if some big cat fish grabbed on to my hook, that I maybe able to bring him in :)

I suggest Abu Garcia spinning reels with uglystick spinning rods. They can be found at walmart at reasonable price. Usually round 85 bucks a set up but I use them freshwater all the time and have brought in monster bass and catfish. Just make sure your drag is set right with about a twelve pound test line or a braid equivelent to a twelve pound test. U should do great.

The rods that I would pick for you which are cheaper , but have great strength and durability would be the shakespeare Ugly stick in about a 6'6" . The reels now would have to be whatever you can throw best . The strongest type would be the open faced reels and there are many varieties and they are the hardest to throw , but easy to learn how to throw. Thee second type would require you to get different type poles and the reel would be spinning reel underneath the rod . The easiest and perhaps the cheapest would be a spin cast outfit and again there are many varieties . Hope this helps andgivess you some idea of what to look for.
