Good first dslr camera for journalism AND high speed photography?

What is your experience level with a camera? Have you used one before (I'm not talking about taking some snap shots).

I assume that you have not, otherwise you would not be asking this question (and I think I assume correctly that you're not taking photography courses either). Journalism is more to do (correct me if I am wrong here) with writing--and someone else take the photos, right? Or you are hoping to do both?

And my other question would be, what exactly do you mean, "high speed" photography? All cameras have speed shutter that can capture movement, you know, 1/2000 of a second to 1/8000 of a second. Are you saying high speed, as in, like a bullet going through an apple shot? Or sport photography?

Any dSLR will do. You really need to learn how to use it though. If you're aiming to take sport photos, more expensive one with larger buffer and faster burst rate (and it needs much more expensive telephoto lens, too) will be quite costly.

So, Im at university at the moment. I graduate (hopefully) in a year and a half. I am a humanities students. I am then going to do seasonal work and do work experience at a magazine or newspaper for half a year, then go and do a post graduate of journalism. I was just wondering when would be a good idea to buy a camera, and what is a good starting dslr?

I am also hoping to do high speed photography as well, just to be a little creative = ) so I do need something adequately fast = )
Im going to do both. I am doing print journalism, and it is really handy to be able to do photography as well. I am not doing any courses in photography, as there arent really any short courses that wont intefere with my degree. The camera I am looking at is 1/4000 of a second.

But, I want to photography artistically as well. Not just for photography.
