I opened my eyes to a new day at the Oakland Orphanage. The light squeezed itself through the blinds and I enjoyed the warmth. I sat up and stretched my weary limbs out. Looking over my shoulder Virginia was still fast asleep and Carly was just waking up as well. All of a sudden a burst of pain exploded in my stomach. I bit my tongue as the pain grew more and more. Sliding off my bed I startled Carly who ran over to me.
“Karmen?”, she cried. “Are you ok Karmen?” She tried to hoist me up but I was bent down in pure agony.
Carly woke up Virginia in a panicked manner. She shook her bed rapidly until she woke up. “Virginia, what’s wrong with Karmen?” she asked nervously.
“Karmen?”, she shuffled over to me.
They both together lifted me up to my bed. Tears running down my face now, I wanted just to die. The pain was so immense. Carly told Virginia to get Robin, our care taker. Virginia sprinted through the halls and disappeared. Carly was asking my questions like what’s wrong, where does it hurt, but I couldn’t answer. My mouth was glued shut with pain. I was sure my tongue was bleeding because I bit down on it with pain, and I was biting it pretty hard. Robin jogged over to my bedside, and crouched down to my level.
“Karmen?”, she asked unsurely. She sprinted out of the room and returned with her husband Carl who mainly took care of the guys. He picked me up and told Robin to watch the kids. Robin said she’d call her brother Chester for help and scooted Carl of with me in his arms. He gently placed me in the back seat and helped me put my seatbelt on. I was still bent over but the pain lessoned. It still hurt like crazy. He drove to the Nearest hospital which was 10 minutes away. He kept looking up at the mirror and asking my how I was doing. All I could do was cry. We arrived at the River and Bluff Hospital and he opened the car door. He lifted me out, my body tensed up and I was getting severe abdominal cramps. He jogged into the main room where the secretary looked up at us nonchalantly.
“Oh my”, she gasped. “Let me get Doctor Drake immediately.” She picked up the phone as spoke determinedly but secretly to him. The pain once against worsened and I was once again in agony. He held me tighter as I bent over holding my stomach. A man maybe in his mid 30’s maybe 40’s entered the room. Carl handed me to him and his muscular arms carried me to a room. The room was empty and cold. He set me down on the bed where I turned to my side. The doctor firmly told me,” I know it hurts but you got to stay on your back”. He helped me to my back and placed an Iv in my arm. I relaxed as the doctor told me to rest. I took deep breaths as he adjusted my shirt so he could just see my stomach. He placed his cold hand where my belly button was and gently moved his hand around to feel for abnormalities. He checked my heartbeat and my pulse. His hand warmed up and I fell asleep to the calming motions that he rubbed my stomach in.
