Good cameras for photography?

so im looking to minor in photography when i go to school.. it really fascinates me.
so i was wondering what the best picks are for cameras?
i just need a beginners one.. under $300

i dont like kodak photography cameras.. just a personal opinion unless someone can tell me why everyone likes them
my top choice is nikon right now..

Any insight will help :)
