Good Bike after EX-500?

I ride an '87 Kawasaki EX-500 (mostly for commuting), and I love it.
However, recently I've been wanting a newer bike with a little more power.
I've considered Ninja 650R and ZZR600. Both have as good gas mileage as the 500 (around 50mpg).
But it seems that 650R is not much more powerful than 500, and 600 might be too sporty and I may feel uncomfortable during long rides.
Can someone suggest to me a fast and comfortable sportbike with good gas mileage?
It doesn't have to be a kawi.
 
The Suzuki SV650 is a good option, but do still consider the Ninja 650R as they are more powerful than the 500s and the ZZR600 which is more comfortable than the Ninja ZX6R supersport.
