good bait for fishing?

ok i go to a local pond/lake and there are blue gill my friend said theres also cat fish, i seen trout and bass, also people put fish in there and they are huge i mean 2 feet long 1 foot wide like 15pounds. ok so i catch baby blue gill all the time but the bass and trout cat fish never bite the lake is kind of dirty and has sea weed i see the fish from close up and i throw the bait and they never bite use worms power bait ad garlic mrshmallows, and they just stare at the bait, but if i go to bigger lakes or river i catch alot of fish
