yesterday i got a goldfish. my friend gave it to me in a fishbowl. i've read information that goldfish don't live in fishbowls very long. also his tummy is quite large and hes a small fish. i'm not sure if hes just fat or hes a girl and pregnant. also he keeps on hitting the sides of the fishbowl. can you guys tell me whats wrong with him?

may have over fed him. I would get a bigger bowl or tank for him or her to be on safe side with little things for him to swim through. Bigger is always better.

You are very right, bowls are death traps for fish. Especially goldfish. He will eventually need at least a twenty gallon tank and a very efficient filter.

Does he look like this? http://katsu2.cside.com/kingyo/ryukin/ryukin11.jpg
If so, he could be a fancy goldfish which means the round belly is natural.
Otherwise it could be that he is overfed or has gas. To avoid this problem feed him a very small amount, and use a turkey baster to expel the flakes into the water. Gulping for food at the surface means they are swallowing a lot of air along with their food.
The other, more unfortunate, possibility is that he has dropsy. This is a bacterial infection that causes the body to swell. Another symptom of dropsy is the "pine cone effect", meaning that the scales of the fish will stick out.
~Goldfish do not get pregnant. Because they are egg-layers they become gravid. The odds of a goldfish breeding in a pet store are minuscule.

Your friend might have over fed it. And I would suggest to get like a 2 gallon tank w/ a filter. But, no biggie if you don't get one. The fish will probably just die sooner.

Oh yeah change the water every week and use de-clorinater!

Well on a goldfish you cant tell whether it is pregnat or not , and it probally is trying to get use to its new enviorment. At the fish store it was in a way bigger tank then the one you have now. So it still doesnt know how big the bowl is. it will take some time on when it can figure out how big the bowl is. On a goldfish you dont need a tank. You just need abowl. Gold fish dont need a pump or a filter.

~br!tt@ny ;p

I have never found keeping fish in a bowl works, and especially a gold fish, they need something to get air into the water, unlike betas that have lungs and breath from the top of the water, gold fish take air directly from the water using their gills. so it is especially important to have air in the tank.

That's right, goldfish don't live very long in bowls.

Look at this website and tell me what kind he is:

I had two goldfish a few years back....Mickey and Mallory Knox
"Natural Born Swimmers".

They too had a small fish bowl so I got a bigger one and I didn't
follow instructions on water changing..

They became "Natural Born Floaters"

So please....make sure you do the water change correctly if you
introduce them to a new bigger home.... Unlike me
