Going to workout at the gym for the first time..need help...?

Ok so i'm a female..19..and I want to start getting into shape at the gym...but I really don't know where to start. I don't just want to go from machine to machine..I want to have a set plan and go in there knowing what to do. Can anyone help me...what exactly are reps and sets? How can I warm up before I go..whats the best time to go during the day? Do they show you at the gym how to use each machine properly? whats a good beginners workout plan? How many times should I go weekly?
