Going to the gym but it seems like I can't lift more?

Recently I have been going to the gym, and once a week I go with someone and we work out together. Everytime that happens I am sore, but not to the point where my arms can't move. Yet it seems like I can't lift more weight. Want to know what I can do to lift more weight, especially increasing my bench press.
I go out more then once a week, but go once a week with a friend. So when I am by myself it is like what do I do to increase my weights.
