Going to Europe

I am going to Europe this summer and i need to know how to get a phone that i can use basically throughout as many countries as possibly, but mostly Spain. i have verizon, and i know i will need an unlocked gsm phone, but i have no idea about the specifics, or what has to be done. please help.

You'll most likely want a quad-band phone, such as the Motorola RAZR or the Sony Ericsson W810i. Then, buy a pre-paid SIM card there, which is cheaper than paying roaming charges.
