For whatever reason a while ago I decided to make my way through the list of films. I won't bother listing them since I've seen so many. Some films have really amazed me such as Goodfellas and I thought the Pianist was fantastic, others have been disappointing like the Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind. For some reason I find it hard to watch older films, I'm not sure why but I can't seem to get into them. Right now I'm wondering whether I should watch Gone with the wind but I've heard very mixed opinions on it. Has anyone on here seen it?

Don't forget that as soon as a new film comes out, it will generally not long after go straight in the list

Another thing to then do is the top ten or so for each genre list or each year

I'd say only watch it if you are in the mood for an incredibly long romantic film.

I had to watch both parts, back to back for 4 hours, as part of my uni course last year, and it really didn't appeal to me. I appreciated it for what it was, but i definitely wouldn't want to watch it again. If you'll forgive the pun, it was extremely long winded.

I love older films, but you have to realise if you're only familar with modern/mainstream films, and the style they are made in, the way they are edited and paced and how they use music, then your brain might find older films a bit pedestrian or strange.

If you forget modern films for a while, and just watch a string of older films, your mind will make the adjustment and you'll enjoy them more and more as you become accustomed to the slower pace.

As for Gone with the Wind, it's a brilliant and epic film.

The version that i watched was split in two by an intermission (they screened a proper film version as opposed to the DVD or the Blu Ray). That's what i meant by two parts.

Every now and again I look through the top 250 to see how many I've seen, intending to fill in some of the many gaps - never happens!:D

It would be good to say how many you have seen to date -

I've seen 108 out of 250.

What about anyone else?

I was planning to work my way through (at least) the top 25 of this list too. I've seen a fair few but I was wondering where you were planning to watch them. Amazon, iTunes etc? Any help would be appreciated. :)

I have seen 115 but I own the Godfather collection (have only watched the first), the Indiana Jones collection (haven't watched any of them) and I own all the Hitchcock films there but have only watched Psycho and The BirRAB (can't remember if the latter is on their anyway) so far.

I own others as well that I haven't yet watched (The Deer Hunter, Lawrence of Arabia, Amores Perros, Once Upon a Time in the West, The Grapes of Wrath, Into the Wild, Cool Hand Luke, Heat, Dr Strangelove)

Man I really need to watch those films.

I've seen 65 out of 250, which isn't bad considering I mainly only watch Old Hollywood movies and romcoms.

'Gone With The Wind' in my opinion, is one of the greatest movies ever made and a personal favourite. I'm not going to say that you'll love it, because I don't know your specific taste in films.. you may hate it, but that's the beauty of films, it's a very personal thing, one persons opinion can totally differ from anothers.
But I do however feel that it's just one of these films that you need to see at least once in your lifetime. I knew I had to watch 'the godfather' just to say I'd seen it, but I didn't particularly enjoy it.

I've watched 210 out of the top 250 now. I'm not sure the ones I haven't watched actually appeal to me.

I actually thought that the Godfather was long-winded and boring!

Gone with the Wind is a fantastic movie, but very dated. The storyline and characterization is really very good for a film of that time. It's a bit of an epic though. If you get the chance I'd recommend checking out the Blu-Ray version which has been remastered (which makes it a bit easier to watch) and seeing it as an exercise in admiring cinematic technique at a time where they didn't have the technology to do the type of special effects that we are so used to in films today. If you place Gone with the Wind in context of the era that it was made, it really is quite remarkable what they manage to achieve with the film.

Either that or you could just be amused at the inherent racism! We've come a long way with that in cinema!
