Going Online T3 w/ palm connectivity kit - questions

Hey guys.

I have a Tungsten T3 and I badly need net access. Cell phone/bluetooth is too expensive.
I am gonna buy the connectivity kit and it's a palm modem - looks like it has to go into a land line telephone via standard cable.

If I am home and say - my roomate is on the PC/net via our dsl we get through the phone company....Can I plug into any of the other telephone lines at the same time and cruise net with my palm?

OR will I need a hub to do this or something?

#2 -

Okay you have the palm, the connectivity kit and lets say you want to use a web browser to cruise the web. Does it cost anything additional?

Will I need to have my dsl account info to sign in with?

confused and quite green to pda-net pracitces...

any advice would help - Thanks

I recently purchased the connectivity kit off E-bay for $16 to use with my T3. Basically, all you need to connect is a phone line and an ISP. I dial in to the same ISP I use on my home computer (Allvantage.com. I don't work for them, but great deal at $5.95/momth). I can check e-mail with Versamail and browse the internet with any Plam web browser. I mainly use Web Pro. When I'm on the road, I just make sure to find an access number that is local to the location I'll be visiting. There are should be no additional charges form your regular ISP. The only extra you might have to pay is if you travel to an area where your only dial up option is a long distance number.

I previously owned a Sony Clie UX50 which had WiFi. I found that most of the places I stayed charged for their wireless internet so the WiFi was never very useful to me. Plus, the WiFi sucked the life out of my battery. The Palm modem has it's own batteries so that isn't so much an issue. It's a great solution if you're an occasional user.

Hi guys, can you tell me the web address for the T3 connectivity kit off E-bay is and when you are on the road how does it work? I use Yahoo for access on my home computer. Would that work also? Thanks. Also do you need any other software? One kit on EBay has a CD Rom with it and I am wondering if that is needed? If I configure my pref. settings to palm modem and my ISP is that all I need to do ?

Just go to ebay.com and do a search for "palm connectivity kit" or "palm modem". Make sure when you look at the details on the modem that it says it will work with your T3. There are some older modems that don't work with the newer Palms.

The modem on your Palm works pretty much the same way the modem on your computer works. You have to a dial up account with an ISP. If you want to connect to the internet you have to plug a phone line into your Palm modem. Under "Prefs" app on the Palm you have to go to "Network" and tell the Palm what # to dial and your username and password for whatever ISP you use. Then tap "connect". The palm will dial up the internet and connect. You can then use a web browser to surf the net or use an e-mail app to send and receive e-mail.

Most dial up ISPs have a list of access numbers on their web site so you can find a local number for any palce you travel to.

Hey! - Thanks Thing!

Done deal - I'm buying it. Cant go wireless atm and wouldent want to - oh!! the hidden charges for tethering/roaming - damn..... some people.

I have an ISP dial up - thru - (please dont laugh - AOL) - but I get my net service thru my telephone company DSL. Looks to me like I have to go in thru my AOL then huh? - wait - no just got offline with them and they said I am good to go - both me and the wife can use net at the same time 1 dialup / 1 dsl.

If not - $6 bucks sounds fair for that net service your talking about.

Really appreciate the help a lot - thanks. If anyone is interested ebay/half.com is dry on palm connectivity kits - but I found one here:

OK!
Done!
Got it!

Lol - and of course a some issues connecting. :(

1st off I am told to NOT install the software that came with my palm modem since I am OS5 and use instead the software on my tungsten t3 disk - I guess they mean web pro?

Into the cradle it goes, connect with stabdard rj11 phone cord to your phone line in a room in the house.
*mind you I do have dial up service through - lol (excuse me - aol) but I also have net service thru the telephone company dsl. So - I can make calls while pc is on net no problem, etc. I also checked with aol and they confirmed I can go online with my palm dial up while the dsl was being used.

Now I have tried a few routes and still no luck....

Again it's a T3 btw... and here are some things I see as I poke around with other pda users. I am getting this error message when I try to connect:

Error: modem not
found (0x1106)

I am taking one particular phone line out of the wall and connecting palm modem to it. (these phone wires have the dsl filters on them...... - should I put the palm modem into the filter first??? maybe..... )

Another issue I saw on another forum (different pda - so that might not wash here) is the problem was fixed when he changed his connections from "PalmModem" - to "Serial to Palm" and viola! it worked!

I have no such "Serial to Modem" type connection to choose from.

for example in "edit connections" I have:

Connect to: 1-PC 2-Modem 3-Phone 4-Local Network
Via : Bluetooth, Cradle/Cable, Infrared

Dialing : TouchTone, Rotary

Volume: ......

Also - I saw this on a thread....

"Preferences - Connection - Edit - Details...
Speed: 19,200 bps
Flow Ctl: Automatic
Init String: ATZ"

My Init String was blank and speed was up around 56k

And I thought I might throw this in to confuse us all perhaps......

"The script AT&FX4X3 will allow the dial to complete in the absence of a dial tone."

I hope these help, maybe....

Anyway - I offered these to the pot I am stirring here. Maybe it's time to just scream help and shut up! :)

Any clue? :o

I may be stating the obvious here so please don't be offended if I am. Have you checked to make sure your batteries (in the modem) are good? Do you have a good connection between the Palm and the connector on the modem? I ask because I've run into both of those issues. If the batteries aren't fully charged or you don't have a good connection the T3 can't recognize the modem. I've had this happen even though I've heard the "beep" when I plug the T3 into the modem. Just make sure to push it firmly onto the connector.

As for the set up on the Palm, you'll need to go to Network under prefs and set up a new connection. I'm assuming you've already done this as it sounds like you've attempted dialing up already. The option to select under "connection" in this dialogue is "PalmModem". Enter your AOL username, password and the dial up number. I've never messed with editing the script as whatever the default is has always worked for me.

I don't know anything about connecting on a line that has dsl filters installed. I'd try connecting on a phone line without them and see if that works. All that being said it really sounds like it's a pretty simple problem of there not being a good connection between the T3 and the modem if the T3 isn't finding the modem in the first place. I've noticed with my modem that there is often a significant lag between when I tap on "connect" and when the modem actually dials.

Once you are connected through dail-up you shopuld be able to use any internet enabled software on the Palm (e-mail, web browser etc.) I use the Versamail program that came on the CD for e-mail and WebPro (from CD) for browsing. Both work fine for me.

Yep - batteries brand new. Was running on them for a time then and will continue to use adaptor for power, just in case.

Finally - in a rush at work I was able to connect. I heard the modem dial and connect and watched the menu change appropriately. This, btw was a straight rj11 line into the wall I removed from my phone temp.

It took a secod try but it worked.

However I went to web pro and the homepage didn't open up - but I was in a rush with little time so I'm now home - trying again. I am not even really concerned with remote hotsync as I am email and net.

The tel. # I used was one of the local area dial up #'s I saw on the aol list. However I was a couple of towns away from home - so I dont know what that may prove but it's interesting.

So it looks like th palm recognizes the modem, the modem can dial and in fact connect. I just may need to tweak it here or ther.

So -some progress - will fiddle around with it more later and keep you updated.

Thanks a lot for your prompt help and responses, much appreciated. :)

oh - btw... obvious sillyness - lol! I have been there believe me - no offense taken.

Another thing on my mind is since I have a dial up account through aol do I have to use the aol software(for palm) that they (conveniently sell for $19 bucks) or just as you say you do - web pro/versa mail all the way for email/etc. ?

Cheers!

Okay - you were right. The damn thing has to be tight in the cradle otherwise it doesent recognize the modem.

Now Modem is dialing and I hear all that wierd data transmission stuff. I realized I was trying to go ppp(serial) and thats wrong so I changed it to SLIP or CLSIP. I got as far as an established a connection. and it looked like I got onto Aol. BUT.........

Problem now is I got some DNS errors..... Looking around forums some one suggested to disable Query DNS and that means you manually enter the dns server adress.

I saw this thread on this forum:

http://forums.hexus.net/archive/index.php/t-7768.html

It looks like the last response - the person supplied the aol dns server addresses for the person posting the question, but they said it is also possible to use any dns server address and may slow things down by a few miliseconds. Should work anyway.

Needless to say after speaking to AOL all they kept doing is directing me to a PDA page to buy thier AOL software and gave me some bullshit about not having and static dns server addresses. yeah right.......

Anyway - after entering a couple of the addresses at the bottom of that thread I can connect. However - nothing is moving anywhere.....

Now I have DNS lookup timed out. Please check coverage and try again.

Now what Batman?

I haven't been online for a few days so sorry about the delay in responding. You may have to use AOL's software. I've never used AOL myself, but I think access to their servers is somewhat proprietary and thus may require their software.

I use an inexpensive dialup ISP called Allvantage. It's $5.95/month and does not require any special software set up. On my PC I just set up a dial up connection from Control Panel and on the T3 I only have to enter the correct # to dial and my name and password. Never had any problems connectiong. Sometimes simpler is better.
