I have a 2005 Chev Aveo with a little over 30K on it. Last night the check engine light came on. I checked the engine, and yes it was still there, and also seems to be running fine with no apperent fault.

I also checked the gas cap, and wouldnt you know it, it was loose. I tightened the gas cap but the light is still on. Now, I may still have another problem but im wondering, can anyone tell me if the problem was indeed the gas cap, will the light eventually turn itself off, or do I have to take it into a dealership to get them to reset the light?

Thanks!

Check the maintenance schedule in the owners manual. Many manufacturers recommend scheduled preventative maintenance at specific mileage points and I believe 30K miles is one of those points. The check engine light may have come on simply because it is time to perform the scheduled maintenance. Also note that simply performing the maintenance or repairs does not reset the check engine light. There are various different ways to reset it from one model of car to another. One way to reset it on most cars is to disconnect the battery for 15-30 minutes then reconnect it. This will reset the computer and wipe all soft error codes out of it's memory. Then if it detects the problem no longer exists the light will stay off, but if it still detects a problem another error code will be generated and the light will come back on. If it comes back on then it is time to take it to a professional mechanic for diagnoses. It does not have to be the dealership unless it is still under warranty.
