Global Warming: Melting of the Iceburgs?

Okay. This question is quite simple. So here it goes.

As basic science theories go, when you place an Ice cube in a glass of water, the water level rises. But when the ice cube melts, the water level remains the same.

The next step is, how come it doesn't work for the global warming issue? When the iceburgs are placed in the ocean, the ocean water level should remain the same, if the ice melts, or not. So how come when the ice is starting to melt, the water level rises, like around the New York area, or just anywhere along the coasts? As basic science theories, how is this possible?
 
1.The density of water is a function of temperature and pressure. Water ice has at least 10 different solid phases in addition to liquid, super critical and vapor phases. At a molecular level, there is not an abrupt border between phases. The difference between liquid water at 0 C and ice at 0 C is the persistence of long range order. In the liquid, molecules form small clusters with the same ordering as ice, but the clusters break apart and reform continually. A small cluster of molecules has a large surface to volume ratio and hence a large surface energy. In the solid phase (ice) the clusters are large enough to be stable against thermal fluctuations of order k(sub)B T where k(sub)B is the Boltzman constant and T is the temperature in Kelvin. Water freezes by a nucleation and growth process in which the larger, more stable clusters grow at the expense of the smaller clusters. The effect of applying pressure is to slightly reduce the intermolecular distances which favors cluster formation. The interesting bit for the present question is that the density depends on the cluster size. The density of water is a population average over the distribution of clusters at any given temperature. An interesting side note is that molecules tend to order beside a surface. That means that the water in your cells has a slightly different density than the water in say a glass at the same temperature. Oceans are large and contain water at many different temperatures. The volume of the ocean will depend upon the fraction of the total at each temperature. From 0 to 4 C the density increases and above 4 C the density of water decreases. One water is above 4 C, any increase in temperature will increase the volume of the oceans even if the mass remains the same.

2. Water from ice melting over land flows into the oceans and increases the total mass, thereby raising the sea level. Although the mass of ice in the Greenland and Antarctic ice sheets is huge, the enthalpy of ice is also huge. By my calculation, it would take more than 10,000 years for these ice sheets to warm up to 0 C and then melt. Most of the melt would occur in the second half of the process. Sea levels are rising due to global warming, but the process is slow (3 mm/yr) and people will have plenty of time to adapt. In my humble opinion, the most serious effect of global warming from a human perspective is the effect on food crops.
 
Thats what I thought until you consider Antarctica, Greenland, Iceland, Siberia and Canada.
Then you get a decent amount of ice supported on land that will flow into the oceans.
 
Because GW is not true, it is a hoax...
there's many flaws within the theory.
 
Well even though the rest of the theory is flawed... there's a lot of land based ice. But to get the predictions they like to bandy about, you'd have to melt ALL of the Antarctica's ice. That's a lot of ice, and it's not about to happen.

(I ran the numbers once on the "average ice thickness" and the area of the south pole... It's a pretty big number, but the average thickness is just a guess.)

If anything a slight warming would likely increase the icepack on Antarctica.
 
the ice in reference is over land, problem is that it isn't melting. The oceans have risen by a few millimeters over the last few years and the alarmists are panicking.

The oceans rose over 100 meters after the last ice age without any human emissions. Now it appears we are on the verge of another ice age
 
The global warming crisis is a hoax. Yes, the climate is changing. It has always been changing. Nothing that you or anyone else can do about it. Air quality and pollution can be made better or worse by people, but that is about it.
What is the perfect climate? And who determines that?
 
it has the same effect. people think that icecaps are suddenly melting ,however this has been an ongoing process since they formed . global warming is a lie and we are actually in a cooling trend right now.
 
Those are called tides and depending where you are on earth they rise and fall twice a day. and for some still not understood reason some tides are higher than average and others lower than average. There are tide marks around the world that were made 200 to 300 years ago and they check today thew same as they did when they were cut. AGW supporters have destroyed historical tide markers in several places in the South Pacific because they proved the oceans were not rising.
 
The ice you hear about isn't exactly icebergs. This stuff is almost like it is part of the continent, whichever continent it may be. A lot of this is not below sea level and is supported by continental soil and ice below it. When it melts, it actually flows into or just falls into the ocean. That's how it can add to the overall "water level." It wasn't in or at the water line before it melted. But, it must be noted that the Earth's average temperature has NOT increased since 1998. In fact it has actually decreased slightly over the past decade.
