Gixxer 600 over 8000rpm problem

Hi there :)

I have had my 600 for just under 2 years now, and have never had any problems... until recently.

The bike is one of the last carb models year 2000 reg X

I was riding at some  slow speed for a few minutes (probably the most I've pushed the bike since I've had it except that 1 time in France but that was about 10 seconds) for at least 1 minute... maybe 2 and I can say there was a 60 on the o'meter, I had just filled up from almost empty (probably the most empty its ever been)

Anyway, as I was riding along at this slow speed the bike suddenly missed a beat enough for me to think woah, eh oh, I've broken it, I've been trying to work out what may have happened... I was thinking something has blown, maybe a piston ring or a gasket has gone or something... Everytime I go over approx 8000rpm I get the same problem, the bike misses as if the power had been turned off, if I ease off then I get the power back...

It was suggested that I may have got rust or something in the jets, I haven't actually taken the carbs off yet but have tried spraying the air intake of each carb with carb cleaner to get rid off any rubbish there might be with the engine running at 3 1/4 throttle...

I was thinking the problem may be a bit more serious, if I stay below 8000 rpm then there isn't a problem unless the throttle is full open then the stutter varies between 5-8k rpm

Rejetting the carbs was on the agenda due to the fact the previous owner put a race exhaust on and didn't bother to sort out the carbs which meant my bike was rubbish in the wet if you went over 100mph, that would cause a stutter unless you put the choke on once the speed was off, a bit of a problem when idling you might say

Any advice would be greatly appreciated, I miss my bike!!!

I'd say you're on the right track. It sounds like a fuel or ignition issue. Clean the carbs and check you fuel filter. Make sure your plugs are in good shape.
