I am a owner of Photoshop and Illustrator and Gimp is more of a clone of Photoshop. If your looking for a professional tool that will give you a great reserve of tool and references you are looking for an adobe product. If you are looking for a cheap tool that will get you buy on some minor personal projects go fro gimp, it's free. You have to also take into count the Illustrator is of it's own from Photoshop as illustrator is as the name implies for illustrating, creating images and drawing. Photoshop is for image manipulation as gimp is. Consider this and make your own decision cause i can tell you that anyone who has access to Photoshop will not choice gimp over the stunning work of adobe.
