Ghostly question: TV sets, why are they so susceptible to ... odd behavior?

Friend of mine has weird things happening in his apartment every so often. I blow most of it off on earthquake tremors/aftershocks (that's just me).

But recently, he was watching TV while working, the TV volume started increasing. He took the remote and turned it down... then the volume increased again. He started fighting the volume on the *actual* TV!! That didn't work, so he unplugged the TV... and it wouldn't turn off.

Now I've heard of this before, and in fact they were even talking about it on Ghost Hunters or something (I saw some clip on YouTube).

What do people make of this? He doesn't make stories up, I've known him for decades. The volume thing I suppose could be infrared interference from maybe some other device in the apartment? FCC laws require that electronic devices accept interference.

But the unplugged thing... well, in the end, he just left the room and the TV shut off a little later. I don't know, the story freaked me out.
