Offer free photography sessions. I know it is expensive but you have to build up a base and have a portfolio to show. Then with those free sessions those people can tell and show their friends the photos you took and you can charge from there. Good luck in building up your portfolio.

Also you can advertise on Craigslist and offer free photo sessions on their also.

Try to see if you can not at least rent an office space to do this. I know I would feel more comfortable in an office type setting than someones home.

I am in the process of opening an at-home photography studio. Does anyone have any good ideas on how to start building my clientel?? How do I get my name out there?? Any ideas would be helpful, I really want this to be my carrer and dont want to fail right off the bat.

first, build up your portfolio by shooting people for free. Network with other photographers and ask for tips from them. Focus on one style first. Until you get that down, then dabble with others. You want to have a solid look to attract potential clients.
