Getting started in electronics.?

I really want to start getting into some basic circuitry and such, but have NO idea where to start. I would take a electronics tech type course at school, but my day is packed full of classes next year. I luckily do have a large amount of experience with programming, which I assume will eventually be useful if I ever plan to make anything unique.

So I ask you yahoo answers, where should I start? Recommended books/sites/kits/etc.
Thanks in advance.

1. For practical experience with kits, try this site:

2. In searching for kits, the following criteria will be helpful, to narrow your search:

a. Price range

b. Just discrete components (transistors, resistors, etc)? Or including IC's (and what complexity of IC's; many IC's have fine-pitched leads that are difficult to solder)?

c. Choose a particular application that you enjoy: Robotics? Music/audio?

d. Once you choose a particular application, an Amazon search will identify excellent introductory books for each particular hobby.
