Getting Phone Verification On Facebook?

Past couple days I kept getting logged out of Facebook on my iphone and then tonight it asked for my phone number for verification....I never had to give a phone number before, even when I signed up for Facebook. Anyone else get this? Is this a new thing Facebook is doing or am I the only one who got this for some reason? Just not sure I want to give my phone number out to Facebook
