Getting better at Civilization 4?

I got this game from a friend who dominates strategy games, but i don't so never even gave it a chance. I recently installed it to my computer, when through tutorial. Unfortunately, i still don't know much, i have been trying the American Revolution scenario but get dominated. WHAT IS THE BEST WAY TO GET MORE PROFICIENT AT THIS GAME?
 
Best way is to practice with computers on easy, and slowly upgrade thier level. I played that game and through practice I kill EVERYONE I play, sometimes I get a friend or two over who also have this game and we LAN it up. But yeah, practice makes perfect. Probally not the answer you want, but it's the correct one xD
