Getting back into mtn biking....x-country or downhill?

I used to do x-country and free ride mtn biking for about 12 years until 2001 when my garage was broken into and I had stolen from me a 99' cannondale super raven, a 99' GT I-Drive Team, and a 98' Klien Attitude Race.

All the time I really wanted to try a downhill bike but never got around to it.

Now I am considering getting back into mtn biking but am not sure if I want to pick back up with a nice, light, x-country bike or get the Downhill I always wanted.

Allot of my friends have noted that x-country rides are good at trail riding and such whereas a downhill is going mainly one direction, down the hill...

I argue this as I noticed downhills have quite allot of gears these days, and it seems that a nice downhill could be used for casual off road trail riding and could likely go most anywhere a x-country could, albeit with an increased effort.

what is most recommended?
