Gesso over old painting cracking?

I am planning on painting over an old oil painting with oil paint.

I have done this sevveral times before using both latex and acrylic gesso primer. Latex primer doesnt work so good. But I have had great success with acrylic gesso primer.

The exact gesso I am using for this new painting I just used a few weeks ago to paint over another oil painting. It was an extreme success. The new oil painting looks amazing, like a painting on a canvas fresh from the store.

I used three layers of this acrylic gesso. I am using the exact same acrylic gesso for my new painting and i applied the same amount of layers [3] the old oil painting that I am going to paint over is around 2 years old and there were no thick painted areas on it so its totally dry [same as the previous old oil painting] I used a fan to dry the gesso on the new painting im gonna do and I applied the layers fairly fast. i noticed after it was totally dry there was cracking in certain areas...why is this? I was not applying any water or anything other than the same acrylic gesso that worked perfectly fine before a few weeks back with my other oil painting yet this time the gesso cracked a lil bit in ceertain areas. Could this be due to the fact that I used a fan to dry it? the fact that I applied the layers fairly fast? [applied fast as in the layers were slightly damp in certain areas as i'd apply the second and third layer] I have no need to apply layers 24 hours apart like some suggest, because as ive stated before I did this a few weeks ago, all 3 layers within 2 hours. I didnt use a fan to dry the layers tho and I waited til each layer was completely dry before I added another layer of gesso.

I added a 4th layer to this new canvas im going to paint over. The canvas is alot neater looking now and most of the cracks have disappeared, not all of them tho. There a few small areas still cracked. Should I gesso over these few small selected areas? Should I apply a whole other layer of gesso? Will I have any problems with these small gesso cracks? These last few remaining cracks are fairly insignificant compared to the first ones that appeared the layer before?

What caused these cracks?

I plan on/ hope to start this painting mid-day tommorow.

all help is greatly appreciated.
