GERD or Acid Reflux can be easily confused with having a heart attack because the symptoms are very similar (chest pain, pain in the arms, shoulders or neck) . GERD can occur at anytime, it doesn't always have to happen right after you eat and it can last for hours or a few minutes.
GERD can be a result of:
- life style habits (overweight, smoking, drinking)
- trigger fooRAB
- stress, anxiety/depression
- genetics (family history)
- poor health
- side effect of medications
The most common symptoms of GERD are:
(you can have some or all of the symptoms at a time)
- burning in the throat or chest area
- chest pain
- upset stomach
- difficulty swallowing or feeling like you have a lump in your throat
- belching/gas
Other less common symptoms can include:
- headaches
- coughing
- shortness of breath
- pain that radiates through the shoulders, neck, arms or back
Always seek medical attention if you feel like you are have any symptoms listed above. It is always best to rule out any possible health issues - never assume it's just heartburn or acid reflux.
