GCSE Electronics help!?

We are studying electronics and my group have been told to prepare a presentation on the decade counter (yawn...)
It is based on the 555timer chip, capacitor and LED circuit with the 4017B decade counter..

I need to:

- Show any formulas used to work out the values of the associated components
- An explanation of how changing componont values effects the circuit

i really don't understand and my teacher is no help either
