Gasket installation on my Harley Davidson 09 VRSCDX (vrod )?

Need help with gasket installation on my 09 VRSCDX . I have a V&h Competition exhaust and have removed the oem gaskets from the header port and have the tapered gaskets that came with the pipes . Does the thin part of the gaskets face out towards the header pipe or do they go the other way ? .
Help a noob mechanic.
