Gardening help please?

I just bought a bunch of veggie seeds like tomatos, onions, peppers, broccoli, etc...but I don't really have a big garden to plant them in. I bought a bunch of pots that are about a foot tall and 9 inches wide. Will I be able to successfully grow these in these pots? Should I plant only 1 seed per pot?

Also, I heard cabbage and thyme will help for insect control. If I plant these in their own pots and leave it by my other plants, will it help? Or do they need to be in the ground
 
Those pots are not big enough to grow plants like tomatoes or peppers.

You could probably grow herbs like thyme, basil, sage and tarragon.
