garageband. Exporting songs in stereo? No idea about this one.?

OK, every time I export a garage band song and play it on headphones for instance, one ear will have music with effects and the other without. Sometimes It splits up midi instruments between ears and I have no idea why. I set the recording input to stereo, I have the balance (is that what that's called?) set to zero, so that's it neither left nor right for each track. Anyone have any suggestions to fix this? Thanks
