I'm watching it on Film 4 now

Great director ... great cast ( well, apart from Cameron Diaz ) ... and a big budget

So what went wrong ?

I can't put my finger on it, but it just doesn't work

Stupid song at the end "The hanRAB that built America" which seems to conveniently ignore the input immigrants from the UK had in the development of New York.

The same thing went wrong as goes wrong with nearly all Scorsese films - for all it's merits, it's just really, really dull.

Gangs of New York as a prelude to The Departed looking at the old Irish Mob in the 1900 and the rise and fall. And The Departed was look a the Irish Mob in boston in the new times.

But overall The Departed was better.

I can't agree with that gashead ... I think maybe DDL's performance was one of the major failings in the film

Don't get me wrong, I think he's great, but he hammed it up too much in this film.

Other great actors have done the same in the past ... notably Jack Nicholson, Richard Burton, and even Brando ( who I adore )

The only 'great' that I can think of, who has never tried to steal the show by over acting at some point, is Olivier

Even in Sleuth, where 'hamming it up' was part of the character, he somehow managed to retain a subtlety that was a joy to watch

Sorry for straying off topic there :o

Oh, I agree, and that's what I love. I thought it was such a ferocious, scenery chewing, towerhouse performance that suited the character. I mean the guy wears trousers that even most golfers would consider OTT and a huge top hat ! I don't think subtlety was a requirement in this film. :D

Great film.. I will admit that there is something missing but i still enjoy the fight scene every time it comes on. (the beginning that is)..

Daniel Day Lewis solidifies his place as an absolutely immense actor but the rest of the cast pretty much fail to live up to expectation.
