I had a "volar wrist ganglion" removed surgically three years ago. That is the kind of ganglion that is on the inside of the wrist at the base of the thumb. Mine is right where you take the pulse, on the radial artery. It has come back, and this time it is more painful. I feel it when I do up buttons, or pick up paper. I also feel it when I am holding a glass and drinking from it. I am a little annoyed that it has returned.......
I will be getting an ultrasound to check it out. My doctor may also refer me back to the surgeon who removed it in the first place.
I would happily go back and get it removed if it was like a dental procedure where you go in and leave after half an hour. Because it is just like any other surgical procedure where you have to go in to the hospital two hours ahead of time, and fast, etc, I am a little more cautious. I may end up back in the OR, but I want to try other things first. If it was not painful, I would just leave it.
I am thinking of going to physio to see if they have any suggestions. I have read that splinting the wrist helps. I have also read that ganglions are connected with arthritis. Apparently there is early evidence of osteoarthritis in the wrist. I do not want to have surgery if the pain is arthritis related. If it is because of the ganglion, I will probably get it removed.
So, I guess I am asking if anyone has any suggestions. I am NOT interested in smashing it with a bible, or hammer, or whatever.....OUCH!
Is it worthwhile to consult a physio (PT)? Does splinting it help? Do you have any great ideas?
Thanks
