Gaming Laptop or Gaming Desktop?

Alright heres my story. I bought my current laptop last year when i entered grade 9. Costing 1000 canadian dollars, i was assured by my dad (i had not knowledge of comp specs at the time) that it was a good computer. It is decent. It has an AMD Turion x2 (dual-core) with 2 GHz and 3 gb of RAM. Its a 17 inch (perfect because i mainly use my laptop at home). Unfortunately, my dad overlooked the graphics card. Its a NVIDIA GeForce Go 7600 discrete graphics with 256MB dedicated DDR2 VRAM. Its pretty crap. I can run oblivion with quite a bit of lag, i can run fallout 3 with a hell of a lot of lag (unplayable lag), but i can run half life 2 smoothly. Obviously, i like gaming and want a better computer. Now i have a more thorough knowledge in the main components of a computer for gaming (graphics card, processor, harddrive space, and RAM) and am prepared to ask more questions.

Here is my dilemma, should i buy a desktop or laptop? Normally i would say desktop because it is cheaper and upgradeable. But the problem is i like being able to bring my laptop over to places and play games there. Regardless of what i get, my current laptop is going to my younger brother. The only thing ive thought of is maybe getting a desktop because its cheaper/upgradeable and, when i go to college, looking into a laptop as well? I dunno. If you guys had to choose 1 which do you think? I want to be able to run games like Fallout 3 in good settings and games in the years to come.

Also, does anyone know any comps that are good for gaming? I like to keep my budget around 1000 dollars, preferably less.
