Gameboy Advance Connection Cord Help: Pokemon Yellow and Blue?

I was trying to trade Pokemon from Yellow to Blue with an advance and an advance sp. I have tried 3 different cords. Sometimes, the yellow version will go through (it says "Please apply here" as opposed to "This area is reserved for two friends who are linked by cable") but the blue won't. And sometime blue will work but yellow won't. I have tried everything I can think of, so I'm not sure why it isn't working.
