G1 will only mount on my Mac as an iPhoto drive

Okay, I just spent 30 minutes doing searches, and didn't find anything on this.

I have a MacBook and a G1. When I plug the G1 into my Mac, it opens iPhoto. (This is after I do the whole "mount" thing, so that's not the problem.) It doesn't register as a separate drive, except in iPhoto. ie, it thinks my phone is a photo card, but won't load it as a drive.

This is seriously maddening. I want to load my SD card with ebooks and other stuff. Suggestions?

I don't have a Mac, but is there a way to turn off the auto actions that the Mac is taking when it sees an sdcard? Not sure if that would be an iphoto setting or a system setting though.

Okay, that worked in part. (for other Mac people, it turns off under Image Capture in Applications). But now it's saying the SD card is unreadable. Ideas?

It's not showing up as a drive, and I am mounting it from the notification bar. My Mac is giving me a message that it can't read the drive, and asking whether I want to initialize it.
