G1 vs. Cliq

Im sure this has probably been discussed before, but I couldn't find any information on it.

I have a G1 now, and the glass screen broke on it the other day. Everything still works, it's just annoying with the screen like that.

I was thinking of upgrading to the Cliq, but I've heard things talking about the hardware being comparable to the G1. Is this true? One of the only reasons I wanted a Cliq over another G1 was the hardware upgrade, and the phone running much smoother and faster. I always thought the G1 was somewhat limited in hardware, which is why it slowed down quite a bit.

Right now I can get a used G1 for about 160 in my area, and a new cliq for 100 bucks more with my upgrade. Is it worth the upgrade?

(I don't care about software at all, software was never an issue for me. Yes, I know I can't root the Cliq like I did my G1, but that's not a huge issue to me at this point.)

Thanks!

Same Processor but a bump in RAM and ROM. Blur kinda sucks to be honest (in my opinion) but the phone is noticeably faster than the g1 ( i used to have one and recently picked up another one to root and play with) and can actually multitask. Problem is the screen. Its just not as good. ITs hard to explain but you'll notice it as soon as you start using it. The HTC phones just have a smoother interface. The Cliq also comes preloaded with crappy software that WILL run in the background (like Telenav) for example. Overall, with so many great Android phones on the horizon, I would wait. The Cliq was pretty outdated the day it came out.... and yes as the above person noted, it can and prolly should be rooted. I would say its superior to the G1 but quickly fading in the face of upcoming hardware.

hardware-wise, i have to agree; the g1 is pretty sluggish, and i'm sure you'll have a smoother time on the cliq. that said, there's a much bigger dev community for the g1, so you have countless roms to flash and have fun with. i personally am no hacker, so if i didn't have a bunch of people with a g1 helping me out, i wouldn't have a clue how to mod my phone.

its actually a newer version of the processor and its faster, a faster board, more ram. blur is faster than regular android, it does suck to some but most people love the social networking integration. i personally wouldnt get either right now, i have both. the cliq is better in almost every way but with the new android dropping within the next few months either wouldnt b worth extending your contract.

Really it's all about the phones that come with Android 2.0 or above now.

The Droid (Motorola Milestone outside of the US) is the lowest spec phone you should consider getting these days. The best buy is probably the Nexus One. The HTC Desire (released soon) is also worth looking at. If you really want a 1.6 phone the Samsung Xperia X10 is the best. If you have to have a keyboard, it's the Droid (Milestone) or wait for the Nexus Two (which I understand is the successor to the Droid/Milestone).

If you have a full upgrade, go with the Nexus One. It's supposed to be $179.00 with a full upgrade, that's almost what I paid for my G1 16 months ago.

If your mobile provider doesn't have the Nexus One, it's worth asking if they give any discounts for "keeping your original phone and not upgrading". On T-Mobile UK they reduce your monthly cost by ?5 if you do that. You may also be able to change price plan to a cheaper one (not all phones can be got with all price plans). Work out what the savings are after 18 months (or however long a new contract would be for) and see if it's cheaper to buy the phone separate from your contract.

For example, if I got a Nexus One now it would cost $529, which is ?350. The cheapest price plan that you can get an Android phone with so ?22 a month for 18 months. If I didn't upgrade I could get a price plan for ?10 per month 30 day contract. As I'm not upgrading, I'd get a ?5 per month discount. So... I'd save ?17 a month for 18 months, which is ?306. So, subtract that from ?350, and a Nexus One would cost me ?44, around $66. Hence, unless T-Mobile UK wanted less than ?44 for a Nexus One on their ?22 price plan, I'd be better off buying it separately.

I would get the droid in a minute if I could. It's not offered for T-Mo though... so I'm out of luck with that one. Correct me if I'm wrong?

Also, after arguing with T-Mo for half an hour about why they removed my upgrade option the other day for no reason (they couldnt figure it out either, and I made them look like idiots) they decided they would give me the Cliq for 160 + tax if I purchased by this friday.

Since I can buy a cliq for the same price as a used G1 around here, I'll go with the cliq since its new. Unless you guys prove me wrong about the droid.

no, droid is definitely verizon only. since you're getting a new cliq for cheap, i say go for it. i checked craigslist for my friend, and cliq's are running like $200ish, so if you keep it in pretty good condition, you'll be able to sell it any make some money for a new phone whenever you want one.

i get offers on my cliq all the time, i can sell it for 300 right now, but um keepn it

i still say get the nexus or wait and see if the nexus 2 gets released soon

I like the nexus, but I'm not gonna pay what they want for it. Besides, I did the tour thing on googles website, and what is so special about 2.0 that 1.6 or anything else won't do?

live wallpapers? sweet!

I've never used google earth in my life, I love Maps just as well, so that's a non-issue for me.

For me, speed is the deciding factor, but without the money to spend on a nexus, and no chance of getting a droid, I'll probably end up with the cliq tomorrow. At least until something worlds better comes out.

lol, no its based on the fact that 2.1 on anything is faster than 1.6. my g1 is way quicker on 2.1 roms then 1.6, once i put 2.1 on it, i never used a 1.6 rom again

My bad - the only videos I've seen of 2.1 running on a G1 showed it running horribly slowly, even when disabling the heavy GPU/CPU features like live wallpapers. However - that was some time ago. I guess stuff has been optimized somewhat since then.
