G1 Unlock code: ********

Please tell me the ramifications of publicizing the Unlock code for G1.
Because I found it and watch someone use it. So what would happen if I told others what it was?
How would it effect the Android community?
I really don't know if I stumbled upon Gold or got pyrite...
So tell me what is gonna happen? Should I spam it here? in this thread?

pretty sure unlock codes are based off the IMEI of the phone (serial number)... i doubt one unlock code would be universal, because this is the case with pretty much any gsm phone

lol so it's pyrite... right now China.. the country is going hot like a ... ( fill in the blanks) for the G1 people are really buying them on Ebay... I don't plan to sell one... but I don't like seeing people get scammed for some hardware... so I really was hoping it would be the same for everyone... or are you wrong? Pretty sure about your "pretty sure"?

99.9 percent sure, yes

i don't want to sound like i'm patronizing, but if gsm phones had a universal lock code for that specific model and brand, it would be spread like wild fire on the internet and everybody would have an unlocked phone

there is hardware you can buy that basically does this...

plus there are sites for certain manufacturers that have a key-gen if you put in your imei... for a lot of old nokias, this is very easy to find

I have 2 lines withTmo, 1 with a blackberry (2yrs+) and 1 with G1 (brand new line). Can I unlock my G1 with my older contract? Just wondering, could wait 3 months...won't be trouble tille next summer anyway. Thx!

Sorry for the hijack.

Hi! I believe as long as you've been a customer for more than 3 months, you can ask for an unlock code. I did this for mine and I only had the G1 for like 3 days, but the family plan we are on have been with tmobile for over 6 years. Just tell them you are going overseas and would like to use your phone. They email you the unlock code and instructions within 3 days.

100% the codes are unique to each network.

You can unlock it by entering a code in your phone.

There are two ways to get the code
1. T Mobile USA (restrictions)
2. Here is a video showing process and where to get it done - G1 Unlock Video

The process is really simple as you can see in the video

No, every time you insert a SIM, the phone's radio first checks if it's an allowed SIM card, then registers on the network of the SIM if it passes the network lock check.

no it wont, I guess you will need an unlock code firs to free your phone from t-mobile. I had similiar issue and after reading messages boards and doing google I found this site that was offering unlock code for $18, made my payment using paypal and code arrived in email with instructions, took main 30 seconds to key in the code and Yahooo!!!!!!! got it unlocked.

Each device has its own unique IMEI which is used to generate the unlock code. Unlock code will only work on the IMEI that it was generated for. Wouldn't mess around with unlock codes unless you have the right code for your phone... in some cases inputting the wrong code multiple times can lock the device from usage completely - in which case, you'll have to reflash the software to fix it.
