Future of Vanilla Android?

Enigma Reborn

Is basic vanilla Android going to die off? Besides the Nexus One that came straight from Google, no recent superphone has come out (or been leaked) to have some sort of custom UI. Desire, Legend, Evo, Incredible, Sidekick Twist, MyTouch Slide, etc. (I know I'm probably forgetting a bunch).

The only way I see vanilla Android staying alive is if phones are shipped straight from Google, but seeing the number of sales the N1 has gotten, I don't see that happening.

My Guess Google don't plan to make any more devices they plan to focus in the OS and software no more Hardware. If is in this way and if I'm not wrong your theory is correct

yeah, i mean, n1 was still manufactured with htc; it was just sold straight from google rather than through a carrier. it's sad though (especially for simms ). i like sense ui, but i have to say i like the speed and customizability of vanilla android more.

Also N1 is no more sell by Google now or soon start sell in Europe by Vodafone plus other carriers and also can put inside any bloatware they like.

You would have think that HTC would have learnt their lesson about Sense from the Hero. Carriers find it hard to update when the latest verison of Android hits, The Hero is still on 1.5 ffs! HTC should bin sense and stick to vanilla Android IMO

Totally Agree but all this big manufacturers like to put their trademark and use all this IU and bloatware to let you know their colors

yeah, i know what you mean. but from a business standpoint, sense does look a lot slicker compared to vanilla android (though eclair and froyo are definitely closing that gap), so i can see how that would appeal to most everyday users that probably don't even realize they're still on 1.5. since i live in the states, i'm not sure how orange and vodafone (correct me if i'm wrong about carriers) are doing on advertising and selling the hero. sprint isn't a huge company in my area, so i haven't seen many sprint heroes. verizon's huge in my area, and yet i've only seen one eris. looks like sense isn't very popular here.

yeah, that's what i ended up thinking of. but from how things are starting to shape up, i don't see a company releasing a device that isn't running a custom ui. could that mean the eventual death of android altogether?

wow, i never actually thought of that. i think google really needs to work on the fragmentation android has right now. i've heard froyo's supposed to clean some of that up, but i don't see how that's gonna happen.

dude, just because OEM'S don't release android phones with custom UI's (almost every phone is anyway) have nothing to do with android's dominance.. UI is just part of the unlimited ways to customize android; most of which is internal. Personally, I really like AOSP now and prefer it over custom stuff, Google has done a marvelous job prettying up the OS and it's geting even better.. wait till Gingerbread comes out as far as fragmentation goes.. watch the android Q&A from Google I/O and see how andy rubin adresses that, I agree with him 100%

I'd think android will branch before it dies, which is a ways away, if it ever happens.

However if Google keeps pushing the os like they have been then all the manufacturers will always need vanilla android since they aren't doing anything for it.

The speed at which google is progressing with android is staggering, and is most certainly a very good thing. It's the fastest growing mobile OS of it's time.. they're not gonna slow down anytime soon. Better software, asks for better hardware; which means older hardware will have a hard time running newer software and is therefore considered "legacy builds"

yeah, i like sense a lot back when donut was the latest release, and donut was hiddeous. eclair looks really nice, and i've actually been running cm 5.0.7 without a theme, and i really like it (once it gets stable, i'll be theming it up for sure ).

i'll be sure to watch the google i/o q&a when i get a chance.

Vanilla is always going to be vanilla, its what all the others are based on. its the senses, the motoblurs... these custom UIs will come and go
