i have a l5 s1 fusion this friday. i went last week for my pre op physical told the doc i have been having tooth ache he referred me to the denist and got the tooth pulled do to abcess but now the doc is unsure if the infection will be gone by friday and the denist told me it should be and my doctors don't know what there talking about no risk of back getting infected so now i don't know if i should overule both the doc and denist and rescheuldle the surgery to make sure the infection is completely gone. anybody have any advice.

spooked,
I had the same thing happen to me. I was scheduled to have surgery(female) and 2 days before that, had both of my wisdom teeth pulled. The concern that the docs have is the anestesia. I was fine. But, that's the decision you will have to make for yourself.

I know the docs are really scared about infections when they open the spine. My daughter was 16 when she had her surgery and had some pimples (acne) near where the incision would be for her fusion. Her doc said it it wasn't cleared up he wouldn't be able to do the surgery. Boy did we have her dermatologist work hard to clear her up. The morning of surgery the first thing her doc did after saying hello was walk over and check her back. He was very serious about keeping infection out.

Good luck. I hope it all works out for you! cas

Having an infection & surgery do not mix at all!!! To many serious risks are involved and if a present infections exists.. surgery should be avoided until the infection is truly gone and can not be evidenced.

It's not worth any risk of life, even if it means postponing.

I know when I was 17 and had my first back surgery, I was running a fever the morning of the surgery with zip symptoms. They finally went ahead with the surgery but put me on massive antibotics from the get go. All turned out fine. I would honestly go with what the anthesiologist and surgeon feel comfortable with. They are more familiar with the procedures and any complications.

Good luck and keep us posted on your decision.

When my surgeon operated to give me a new hip after breaking my own, he admitted to me that he wished he had put me on some preventive anti-biotics because I'd had a history of being a carrier of MRSA (methicilan resistant staph aureos sp?). Sure enough, after being home 2 weeks I was suffering from a full blown MRSA infection in my hip area and throughout my entire body (my blood, my heart). I ended up in ICU and isolation for 45 days fighting the worst infection of my life. I was very, very sick! So, if I were you, I would wait until the infection had completely cleared up and the docs felt comfortable with operating. You really don't want to risk something that could be lifethreatening if you have the chance to put it off for a few weeks. All the best - Memere (K'Mac)
