your linux problems were no doubt either hardware quirks or something you did. i've been using linux for about 10 yrs now & it's the most stable os (aside from bsd) i've ever run. try out the vpn app i suggested, it works great and personally i'd never trust a microsoft VPN. so you don't like linux and you say fuck windows...looks like your destined for a one buttoned mouse.:D

gentoo is one of the best, downside is if your new and you want to do it right it can take you up to 3 days to install, took me 4 my first time, although i kept fucking it up...hint hint read the handbook at the gentoo website, but yeah its probably the most user friendly.
 
i still like debian over gentoo just for the advanced features. bsd is really stable also, but i'm so accustomed to procfs it annoys me not having it.
 
for anyone just trying to learn linux right now, just get a LiveCD version of a linux distro. That way you can learn it but not have to figure out how to setup a multiboot. That's what I did for my first times using linux.
 
since this has turned into a "suggest which linux distro" thread i'll put in for centos... its basically built from redhat's enterprise linux (commercial distro) but is obviously community driven.... great for learning
