Fuck Fuck Fuck!!! (long post)

Most of you know how hard I've been trying to get a job and my lack of success. Well I've put in multiple applications with the school system and last week I had an interview for a secretary position scheduled on the 6th, which the receptionist to the interviewing manager called me on the 5th to change because of last minute "unforeseen events" that made them change the date. This was a pretty big inconvenience because it was a real pain to make arrangements for this and a bigger pain to change them. Anyway, I spoke with the receptionist (as already mentioned) personally and set up the interview for today at 10:20 at the downtown office.

Last Friday, I got another call from someone else that said only this, "Hi, this is so-and-so from the school district calling about a position with the school district. Your interview is scheduled for 10:20 on Tuesday the 12th at (some other location). If you have any questions please contact us". So, since I've only been dealing with secretaries or assistants I thought, "oh, some other "unforeseen" event must have made them change the location. You can see where this is going....

At any rate, I was double-booked by the same employer by two separate departments. I didn't even realize this until about 11am at the other position. When I realized this I told the coordinators there what I think happened, they just said, oh... we see, then continued on with the orientation that consisted of myself and the other 6 applicants. The moment they put us all in a room and began to pull us one by one in for individual interviews, I decided, I wasn't qualified for this position and would leave as soon as one of them was available. This opportunity did not occur until it was about 11:20 by this point. I spoke to both of these coordinators separately and they both said I should go straight to the other manager and tell her what had happened.

I did this, I arrived at the downtown office around 11:45 and it took until almost 12pm before the bitch saw me. Yeah, you know this went well. Anyway, I was extremely apologetic and she was already accusing me of ... I dont' know, I suppose lying because she said, her receptionist said that she spoke directly to me and told me that the interview would be at that location. I told her yes, that's correct, but the other position only left me a voice mail and didn't state what the position was for, so I just thought the location had been changed because of the time and date set. She then said,"Oh, I'm sure they stated what the position was for..." I told her "No, they didn't in fact I didn't even realize what it was for until I had been there close to 30 minutes as they were running late".

She told me, "well, thanks for your interest and stopping by to explain". I asked her if I could reschedule. She then said, "We don't know if we're going to reschedule for this position at this time". I just said, "fine, and thanks" and walked out of the office with my head high. Got to my truck and cried like a fucking kid.

I have one more position still pending with the school and unfortunately it is with the same woman...

I GIVE UP!!! I have literally applied for every fucking position in this town I'm qualified, with every company, and I don't even get a CALL back in most cases! WTF?!?!?!
I even have my resume on file with a temp agency and THEY'RE not even calling!!!!! I need to go outside and SCREAM now!

Finding a job can be a hard thing at the best of times, where i live, unemployment has hit a 15 year high. You have three choices.

1.Start applying for jobs for which you are not neccessarily qualified, sometimes you can catch a break just by changing career. Sometimes the only way to move up is to move sideways first. I made a change from cheffing to retail and that has opened up a lot of opportunities which i had not considered.
2.Look for positions in a different area. Sometimes changing location can not only land you the job you want but also revitalise your career aswell as your social life. Every area has different needs and where a certain skill may be available to an employer in one area there is always somewhere else that is crying out for people with your skills.
3.Consider re-training, whether it be full-time academically or a part-time course in the evenings. The later being the preffered because it allows you to gain a skill whilst earning money thus improving your C.V and paying the bills, if this is the route you take, any job will do, aslong as it pays enough.

The key to a good chance of getting a job is having a good mix of diversity, (a selection of skills which can be transferred) and speacialisation (specific skills which in a particular field are sought after). To much speacialisation will limit your job opportunities but allow you to gain a job in one specific area that pays higher, to much diversification will allow you to walk into any job but not progress.

I should send you my resume lol. I have experience in programming, customer service, administration, office management, marketing, retail and collections. I am applying for ANYthing that I feel qualified for...

I don't have the money to go to school, and my husband makes too much for financial aid. I'm fighting being in default of my current student loan at the moment (we've hit hard times financially). I can't relocate my whole family for a low paying job and my husband is too specialized in a local market that really doesn't exist past this God-forsaken city, trust me I've looked even on a national level.

Thanks for the input though. :)

how about starting up your own business, though i must stress this is only something you should venture into with absolute confidence. Send me your resume if you want, i can look it over, there are loads of little things and keywords that employers look for, a few of those can immedaitley make your resume 100% better without changing the content

HiH, have you looked at Craig's List? They often have descent job listings without as much headhunter spamming, and in a lot of places they have local listings. Another, and probably the best leads you will get will be from people you actually know. Talk to your friends and your husband's friends and extended family members. To my experience, one friend in an industry is worth a thousand job listings.

Honey, are you sure you've applied for EVERY job? I mean, did you just go to the places that are hiring? Cause sometimes places that aren't hiring will still accept an application and boot a couple p/t workers. Anyway, just a thought.

Honey, that sounds terrible, and that woman sounds like a completely self-centered bitch. You should probably be glad you don't have to work for her. but I understand the frustration of not being able to find work. It's exhausting, mentally, to keep applying for positions and never hearing back; or worse yet hearing back and not getting the position.

Keep your head up. You're very intelligent, eloquent, and witty, and I have no doubts what-so-ever that you'd make a "valuable addition" to any company smart enough to hire you. Some people say everything happens for a reason; I say sometimes shit just happens and there is no reason.

If you don't mind me asking; what kind of education do you have? how many years experience in each of the fields that you mentioned before? Is there a specific industry in which you'd prefer to work?

I have an associates degree in applied computer science. I worked retail for over 5 1/2 years, programming 18 months, customer service (including all past experience) 8 years, collections 6 months (was a temp position), office management 1 year, marketing about 6 months, and admin I'd say about 2 years.

Hell, Tost hun, my brain is so fried at this point, interest has little to do with anything as much as a paycheck. I suppose I'd like to use my skills in data entry and creating presentations, simple graphics (although as skilled as I am I lack the experience with the newer industrial type of software they use for most jobs that require those skills)... yeah, graphics would actually be awesome, as well as photography. Actually my business license expired in April for photography and graphic arts. I tried to do a home-based photography business. But I didn't have a studio, I could only be a site photographer and I just was too damned afraid of too much response because I have a hard time telling people, "no", so I didn't advertise and it just faded. I did a little (very little) bit of photography for my sister's old gym and my son's t-ball team, I think I made whopping $30 for my whole year doing that... I'm also too humble to charge what I should. I just can't seem to mark up prices to make it worth my while.

I've always wondered what a nervous breakdown felt like, I'll let y'all know...

Photography would be a great job, but i know what you mean about saying no and charging what you're worth. I tried to make jewelry for money, but never knew what to charge.

A friend of mine in LA when I was going to High School used to go around taking pictures of business and such (he had a good eye for photos). Then he'd go into the business after they were developed and show the proprieters, asking if they'd want to purchase them. Most of them would; he made good money for a H.S. student.

I'm sure you've tried entry level positions too. They suck ass, but they're a good way to get your foot in the door. I've done the temp thing myself a few times too; i like it for the most part.

What hobbies do you have? I've thought about trying to get a job at the disc golf course (one of my hobbies) manning the pro shop part time. That might be an idea; see if you can find a job that relates to one of your hobbies.

I just had a mental image of you working at Glamour Shots like the girl in Napoleon Dynamite with your hair in a side pony tail hehehe.

O M G!!!

I called the woman back a little later on after I thought she had time to "cool off" and apologize again and try to explain again what happened. She was still stuck on the fact that HER secretary said she talked to me directly and set up the time.... I NEVER FUCKING SAID SHE DIDN'T!! It's like she's on the defensive. I again, just told her where my logic was and why I came to the conclusion I had. Finally, she got it through her thick skull that it was the OTHER interviewers that somewhat screwed me up by not being more specific in the voice mail and even perhaps in calling one time and setting up an interview with voice mail. She then said, "yes, well a follow-up call would have been wise". DUH! But I didn't feel the need to call back as she had already had to change the day and time once before, I figured whatever caused them to have to reschedule everyone on the first day, caused them to have to relocate. Not to mention I hadn't heard anything at all PRIOR to that day about the other position... Am I being weird here? I really do think this was a very simple mistake to be made.... anyway, I didn't feel like going into that again with her, so I didn't. Still, no offer of a reschedule.

Fine, that's fine, I go to the school district website to see about the other position I still have my resume in for that I'm waiting to hear from and guess what? The position that she refused to reschedule my interview for is REPOSTED! Yes, they are reposting it as of TODAY! This means that it's open again, and they didn't find anyone today to fill it!!!!! Somebody PLEASE explain this to me!!!

AAARRRRGGGHHHH!!!!!

(Oh, and Tostig, all the positions I'm trying for are pretty much entry level, I can't take less than $10 / hour though as it wouldn't pay me enough to put my kids in daycare to work...)

Send a letter to her boss about her abusive treatment of you (yes, abusive). Reapply for the same position and, if you're still the most qualified, they should set up an interview again.

Unfortunately, nothing will change her being a bitch. You're not being wierd or anything; i think you hit the nail on the head. She's feeling affronted and defensive because she was made to wait (instead of making you wait. i see managers do it a lot, it's a dominance thing).

I might get the interview, but as she's the hiring manager, I doubt I'd get the job if I got her repremanded. Really, she's saying all this and being "polite" with a somewhat undertone of snootiness as she does it, so anything abusive would be up to my own interpretation... well, that's probably what they'd say anyway.

I still recommend trying to get the inside track on job opennings through existing networking. When some sort of preexisting (even indirect) association is there, a lot of businesses view this is a measure of trust. Of all the jobs I've had, I've only secured 2 non-shit jobs (1 if you consider the Army a shitjob) without knowing someone who knew someone who worked there. Companies like to put the word out through people already work there, that way the new applicant isn't a complete stranger. They also save money on job ads. Essentially, it boils down to who you know over what you know.
