Our fridge was set too cold, so that items placed in the bottom of the fridge were freezing slightly. My girlfriend says this is a bad situation, since if food is frozen and than subsequently defrosted (for example, now that we have turned the temperature up a bit in the fridge) then the said food should be consumed within 24 hours - even if the food in question has 5 days of refrigerated shelf life stated on its label.
How can this be true? Storing an item of food colder than is stated on the label can not surely reduce its shelf life?
She claims most food bought frozen in the first place, and subsequently stored in the freezer, states on its label that the contents must be consumed within 24 hours of defrosting and why should the food inadvertantly slightly frozen in our fridge be any different.
Please help me resolve this so we can put this issue to bed - and get to bed ourselves!
