We got a lot of snow where I am at and I put my truck in four wheel drive. It was fine but then I was backing up on dry pavement (roads were snow covered but where I was at it was dry) and I heard a loud bang that sounded like I hit a car ( I was at a gas station) and then I started noticing this clunking sound, at first it was only when it was in reverse and now it's clunking in drive too. Thought maybe taking it out of 4 wheel drive would fix the problem but putting it in 2 wheel it still makes a sound like something hitting or moving inside the front end. I have a friend who took a look at it and he says it is the front differential is broken inside. My question is...how much to have this fixed? Will it need replaced completely? Is this something my husband could do (he is pretty good with cars but I just worry that he'll take on something he can't handle)? Also, after doing some reading on the internet I have found that the half shaft could also be the problem, so any idea's on what it would actually be? Any help is appreciated.
