From TV show to movie

Having just read the A-Team thread I was wondering if any other TV series would make a good film.

Generally they don't. Some that come to mind are X_Files, Dukes of Hazard, Sex and the City, etc. Even cartoons, He-man anyone! Dragonball isn't looking too good.

I can only think of one good conversion - Serenity (there must be more?). I suppose Star Trek's done ok. Just remembered Police Squad - Naked Gun.

Are there any TV series that would make a good movie? Following Slumdog Millionaire how about Goldenballs the movie?

The problem with film versions of TV series is that the films often fail to grab the chemistry and magic of what made the TV programme good in the first place. The Avengers film is a classic example of this, the film is pretty faithful to the TV series but the performances of Fiennes and Thurman couldn't match McNee and Rigg in the slightest add the missing bit of magic and everything went flat.

The examples you listed above all use the same cast and producers of the TV series that made them great which is why they worked (I'd say the first X-files film worked even if the second one didn't).


Saying that if these films have to be made, Magnum PI the movie can't be too far away
