from tennis to 100m track and field sprints?

hallo.
i have been playing semi-competitive tennis for about 6 years (i am currently 17..and a girl if that changes anything) and decided to take a break from it. i stopped playing at the beginning of the summer in 2010. i used to go train 3 times a week for 3 hrs (2 hours on court and 1 hour fitness training). Even though im taking a break, im thinking of exploring other sports besides tennis. During fitness training in tennis, i absolutely loved sprinting so i was thinking of joining my school's track team.

Unfortunately, i haven't done much physical training ever since June of last year (just 3 hours of swimming a week for my lifeguarding class) and don't really know much about sprinting in track and field. My school is starting indoor training in about 2 weeks.

Would anyone with knowledge on 100m sprints recommend me doing it?
if so, are there any general tips i could use to start working on during this time?
also, if anyone feels like telling me more information on sprinting in track, i would greatly appreciate it.
