from 515->TX : howto?

Hi,

I am a satisfied user of a Palm m515 which I use daily, mainly because of the following programs: DateBk5, SplashID, MessageEaseKB, Bonsai and SplashMoney.

I'm now thinking to switch to a TX, mainly because of the non-volatile memory. In this context, I have 2 questions:

-1- According to their respective websites, all the above-mentionned apps do run on a TX. Can you confirm this, or are there any known bugs or problems?

-2- Of course I'd like to keep my data. I thought about upgrading as follows:
  • upgrade to the lastest software versions (i.e. those that support both 515 and TX) on my current 515 and hotsync
  • then install the new Palm Desktop, Documents to Go which come with the TX and hotsync again
Will this work in a flawless way, has anybody done this without losing anything?

I'd definitely recommend AGAINST doing it this way. In many Palm forums there are "horror" stories of people who did not follow the Palm suggested way of going to the TX.

You will be much happier, have fewer (possible none) soft and/or hard resets if you start fresh and install the software from step one.

You may then be able to export data from the 515 for import into the TX, or possibly beam what you need to your TX.

I don't know if the 3rd party applications have "beam" capability, but there should be some way of transferring the data.

Once again, the safest and least troublesome way to convert is to follow the Palm instructions.

In addition to what fnagle said I would add this:

The TX's installation will safely store all of your "old" programs during the first part of the installation. It will not install them at all.

I'd take it one step further: I would rename the following folder:

C:program files\palm\username(of the M515)\backup to backupold just prior to installing the TX's desktop. This will prevent any old applications from getting on the TX as 99% of them aren't compatible right out of the box until you've upgraded to their newer counterpart.

Then go find the latest version of your "old" software and install it clean.

This seems logical for applications that have a Windows conduit where you can export from the old version and import into the new version. But what about, for example, DateBk5?
 
DB5 uses the notes field to encode information for it's usage. These notes are not deleted at anytime as long as you bring over your existing PIM data.

So what will happen is you sync - then add in your DB5 icon set (if you customized it) then add back in a new version of DB5 - reset the handheld and you should be good to go with all of your data intact and looking just like it did on the M515.....except that the icon set is low res where as the TX is high res. You might want to use Icon Manager to convert these old style icon's but that would be about it.
