I would have kept calling, sent an e-mail and called one of his or her friends to see if they have heard from my friend. I would try and go round to their house. I always try and be there for my friends.

2. Send emails until I got hold of my friend
3. Ignore them completely cause yard work was more important that day
4. Send an email 2 days later saying "you got bad news, has the cancer spread"? The reason I am writing you this email is to tell you that i am leaving answers but I will email and IM with you if you want...

2. I wouldn't call because sometimes people just want to be left alone with their bad news, and I figure they'll get to the e-mail eventually.
