Friction Zone

First, my profile says I have am M50 but I don't really have one yet...that was wishful thinking at the time. I've been debating with myself over the M50and the Honda Shadow Aero. The debate is over and I expect to have a new M50 by this time next week.
I have just one more question before I sign the deal.
Last year I had a Yamaha V Star 650 custom. I sold it at the end of the year. That bike had NO friction zone...maybe 1/4" tops. There was nothing I could do to change it. It made slow speed maneuvers really difficult. Right hand turns from a dead stop were a real test. I don't want to have that again. Sooo, my question; how big is the friction zone on the M50, and how does it handle in slow speed turns? Thanks for your input.

Nice choice! :bluethum:

The bike handles like dream, although I don't have much experience on riding many different bikes so that makes my opinion only worth .02. :)

Maybe one of the mods can move this question to the M50 hideaway or Paddock so more experienced riders can help.

My uncles 650 vstar custom is the same way, the friction zone really sucks, on my C50 it is completely different and the M50 should be about the same. You should have no issues the friction zone at all.

I have a C50 and the friction zone is very good. I found it usefull to take the bike to a big parking lot and practice finding the exact limits of the friction zone. The one I used - FedEx Field has hills in the lot as well so that doubled equally for finding out about atarting on hills.

Hate to ask....I have an idea what a friction zone is but.....What Exactly is a friction zone?

Even without knowing, my M50 handles great and I have no issues at all with any type of manuevering. Other than after I installed a set of kurakyn footpegs with stilleto tips I have drug the skid balls on some turns other than that...:bluethum:

Man I was WAY off on that one....thought it had something to do with handleing:lol4:

Ok.....now that I know....The "friction zone" on my M50 is perfect. Smooth engagement...way different than the Duece in my trailer:shock:

The friction zone is excellent on the M.

RA not to be a j@## but the MSF course covers a lot of that if you haven't taken it yet it is a good to take either as a saftey course to improve skills or a refresher course.

Pete, Already done....23 years ago. This ain't my first rodeo brutha!! I'm not used to the "lingo" in the motorcycle world. Plus I just had surgery and am all painkillered up so I shot from the hip on my initial post:mrgreen:

Can I get some of the pain killers? Wasn't sure if you had been riding much or not. If you were new I figured it might help. Hope you get to feeling better.

The difference is probably due to the fact that the VStar 650 has a clutch cable, and the M50 has a hydraulic clutch which is self adjusting. The chances are, your clutch cable was not adjusted correctly, and causing premature engagement of the clutch, upon release of the lever.

man I'm glad you asked about the friction zone. I didn't want to be the only person who has been riding 27 years and still not know what it was. lol
