Free t-mobile phones?

are phones like the tmobile samsung gravity ACTUALLY free? i know that i'll still have to pay for the plan. and any added features that i might want. that's a given. i just want to know if the phone itself is actually free or if it's just online. i also want to know if you'd have to place a deposit on the phone. and, if so, how much? i'd like it if people who actually purchased the supposedly free samsung gravity from tmobile.com paid. thx
