free games to play similar to civilization?

I'm not sure what you call games like civilization, but i'm wondering if there are any free online or downloadable games where you build up your own little community etc. it doesn't have to be as intricate as civilizations but that type of game. Any suggestions?
 
Travian is a similar game to Civilisation. Although, it is much slower. However, it's free.
