I was recently told by some students who visted Amsterdam that it is common practise to find unlocked bicycles about the city, which people then use and leave when they're done. All free of charge! And as long as the bike is unlocked, and usually looks pretty old, go ahead and ride it. I just wanted to know if this was as true and simple as it sounds! As some friends and I are visiting in the summer and this would be great to take advantage of. Thanks for any help!
